Limited series - multiple ideas
Contemporary Art | Multiple editions, works or artists books produced in multiple copies, open a space of liberty and experimentation to the artist, increasing dissemination of the work and consequent notoriety. Multiple works are making a come back on the scene and receiving a modern revalorization.
Porosity between the art, decorative art, brands such as Bernardaud with capsule collections, state manufacturers such as Gobelins or Sèvre, is currently encouraging a resurgence of the multiple edition and the birth of an accessibly-priced market : auction houses, special fairs, and exhibitions mark this powerful comeback.
- In the wake of Artcurial opening a department dedicated to editions, Piasa launched itself into this part of the market, calling on artist Mathieu Mercier, a collector of multiples and founder of GDM gallery, to curate a sale conceived as his imaginary museum.
- MAD - Multiple Art Days - is a new fair, reinforcing the recent success of the multiples market and limited editions. The fair is conceived and organized by the prospective organization CNEAI, a national center of contemporary art dedicated to media works, that opened on the Impressionist island of Chatou in 1997. The launch of the first fair in May 2015 crystallized the success of this emerging market with contemporary art collectors.
- The exhibition Idées multiples at the Galerie des Galeries in the heart of the Galeries Lafayette features six figures from different creative domains, connecting them through an experimental web of eight limited edition works paired with fashion and design objects.
The multiple puts in play the interaction between experimentation and « use » value, questioning the role of the editor as visionary advisor.
