Art Basel Cities - Buenos Aires

Art Market | Art Basel Cities, the new field of activity for the Swiss faire that consists in bringing its expertise and the Art Basel label to cities looking to structure their artistic scene and attract international attention, has announced a partnership with Buenos Aires for 2017.

Buenos Aires is the first satellite-city to benefit from Art Basel’s expertise and extensive network. Conceived in two parts, the collaboration is set to begin at the end of 2017 with a series of programs in Argentina supported by influential local figures such as Alec Oxenford (president of the arteBA board of directors) and Orly Benzacar (director of Ruth Benzacar Gallery). These initiatives will then be presented to Art Basel’s global audience during its three fairs (Bale, Hong Kong and Miami).
This first choice is first and foremost strategic, given the recent economic measures Argentina has taken to liberalize its economy – a softening of a protectionist policies and the settling of a dispute with “vulture funds” that have allowed it back into financial markets. The Art Basel label will draw international focus to the city’s vibrant artistic scene, teeming with artists, museums and galleries – breaking down boundaries and activating the historic and contemporary profile of Argentina in the global marketplace.
