Contemporary Art | The 2013 Lyon Biennial entitled In the meantime, suddenly and then explores questions raised by modern-day narration. In this post-media period, its curator Gunnar B. Kvaran, has selected intergenerational artist proposals which create new visual tales.
He has also made a conscious choice based on his own experience as a curator rather than historical factors. We are thus immersed in his story and that of his current perception of art.
Spread over five locations, around sixty artists talk about themselves and their approach to life. The point of departure for all of the pieces is a sentence from each creator as a means of introducing and shedding light on their story. And so the self scenography begins. Although such subjects as intimacy, sexuality, religion, politics and time are raised, the prevailing theme is a nostalgic sense of lost childhood among the young western artists where cartoon references are frequent. One regrettable aspect of this collection is the deployment of measures which, in seeking to tell a story, blur the sense of the message. But there is also no doubt that art is evolving in the image of this society.
