The Sharjah Biennial broadens its influence

Contemporary Art | The Sharjah Biennial, which was created in the United Arab Emirates in 1993, will expand in time and space throughout its 2017 edition. Its curator, Lebanese Christine Tohme, reassesses the biennial’s role with a multidisciplinary program that unfolds in five different cities. The usual centralized exhibition format is questioned through a call for a local/global dynamic.

In 2017, the Sharjah biennial will take place in various countries; for the first time, it started in Dakar in January and will continue with off-site projects in Sharjah (March), Istanbul (May), Ramallah (August) and finally Beirut (October). The event’s title, Tamawuj (which refers to a wave’s undulating movement) alludes to a new wave of common reflection around four vital subjects that have been present since ancient times : Water, Earth, Crops and Cuisine.
