Contemporary Art | The 2010 Thierry Davila essay “Inframince : a brief history of the imperceptible, from Marcel Duchamp to the present day” (Du Regard editions) traces the (in) visible history of the imperceptible.

We learn that this concept is already explored in Antiquity, through a Pliny the Elder story recounting a contest between Protogenes and Apelles to establish who is the greatest artistic genius by drawing a line so thin as to be imperceptible. Conceptualized by Marcel Duchamp, the inframince is the fourth dimension that has lead to current research surrounding the dematerialization of the art object. Invisible transformations (ref.
