Art as foil for the effects of mass tourism

Contemporary Art | To mitigate mass tourism’s perverse effects on population flux and a low-end summer economy, the city of Baux de Provence has adopted a contemporary art approach, becoming a privileged partner of the festival-a-part. The Louis Jou Foundation, which preserves and diffuses the work of the printmaker and typographer, is at the heart of nine spaces devoted to current production. Goya’s series of etchings « The Disasters of War » is the starting point for the invited artists, whose prints were all realized on the foundation’s presses, including the 86 artists flags raised like an army on 4 meter-tall poles on the Baumanière estate. In this complex setting, a new type of mediation is an indispensible corollary to such an initiative, necessary to reach not just the general public but also the city’s economic players.
