Contemporary Art | Following the sponsorship of his retrospective at the Tate Modern in 2012, the Qatar Museum Authority has offered Damien Hirst the Doha museum of modern and contemporary art, the Alriwaq.
Curated by Francesco Bonami and considered a blockbuster event by the artist, Relics is generating international interest and a high number of Google searches. The significance of the event is illustrated by the complete transformation of the building facade with Spot Painting and the permanent order of the gargantuan The Miraculous Journey, estimated to be worth $20 million. However the impressive communicative abilities of Damien Hirst are in evidence away from the exhibition on dedicated website Damienhirstqatar where the powerful influence of social media is used to get people talking. There are around twenty hashtags to choose from (#dhagree, #dhrelics, etc.) and internet users are asked to give their views on both the exhibition and the artistic approach, with Facebook, Twitter and Instagram seen as the channels for a Manichaean-style expression : yes/no, for/against. This operation is the culmination of the Qatar UK 2013 programme. Damien Hirst?s presence in Doha follows on from that of Takeshi Murakami, another recognised talent in the global art market.
